The contemporary hotel, which one reviewer called an "oasis of cool," stands one block west of the famous Powell Street cable car line at Union Square. Just out the front door are high end shopping, theaters and fine dining synonymous with San Francisco. Housed in a 1930s colonial revivalist building, the Metropolis was redesigned with an inventive theme based on earth, wind, fire and water. For example, each floor of this 10 story hotel reflects each of the elements with symbolic color, design, graphics, artwork, rich fabrics and custom furniture, such as African limba wood desks and alarm clocks that emit nature sounds. Like humorist Dave Barry put it, we're not making this up.
